I figured I would take it back to the beginning. Rather than focusing on all advanced information, lets talk about the basics. Are you a cosmetology or aesthetic student looking for the right career? Are you unsure what industry to get involved in? Do lash extensions sound exciting to you? Well, guess what… They are! Lash extensions are super fun and exciting and doing them can make a great career. What is a Certified Lash Technician

Let's start by making sure this is the career for you! So what is a certified lash technician? A certified lash technician is a licensed individual who either works for themselves or works under a business doing lash extensions!

Qualifications for a Certified Lash Technician

The qualifications for a certified lash technician don't stop with the "certified-ification" (lol new word alert). Many states require you, yes be certified in lash extensions, but also be licensed as either a cosmetologist or aesthetician! Why is that? Well, any time you are working on a sensitive area of the human body, it is necessary that you know more than the average joe-shmoe. Lash extensions also require a few different chemical products that, if used incorrectly, could severely harm or damage the eyes or skin, YIKES! Not all states, however, require a license believe it or not. I recommend that you be licensed, though, as it will make you a credible and reputable option for potential clients!

Schedule for a Certified Lash Technician

Whether you are working for someone or working for yourself, your income is based on your schedule. Most certified lash technicians work lots of hours…because they like lots of money! You will, of course, want to choose work days that work best with your home life/schedule, but most importantly days that work best for clients! It isn't out of character for a lash technician to work through the weekend, because that is when most clients are available. Working for a salon, you can assume you will work 3-5 days a week with 5-8 hour days. Working for yourself, you may have some weeks that you work 2 days and some that you work 6 or 7! Just keep in mind that your income is based on your dedication and schedule.

Income Potential for a Certified Lash Technician

Pay for this position can range from an average of $14 to $25 hourly. Now, don't let that deter you; this position is almost NEVER paid an hourly wage. Those amounts are based on annual income and tips averaged. If you work for a lash studio or salon, you will generally see a commission of around 25%-45% . That means your average hourly will range closer to $14-$19 hourly. If you have your own lash space and business (and a steady clientele which is, unfortunately, much more difficult to develop as an individual) you can assume you will make closer to $20-$25 hourly. BUT (the big but), a large percentage of that amount may end up going back to your space rent, taxes, and products! All things to know and consider when exploring a career as a certified lash technician!

That being said, based off of qualifications, schedule, and place of work (with other factors like area, price per service, and overhead costs) a lash technician has the potential to make great income and have a great career!

How to Become a Certified Lash Technician

Awhhh, the certification. Let's talk about it. Yes, this is necessary. No, it does not have to be an inconvenience! Ranging from 1-3 days, a lash certification course will cover everything you need to to start your career as a certified lash technician. From sanitation to application to certification, this is the first and most important step you will take toward your new career!

Lash certification classes range in price from $300-$2000, but why such a wide range?! Content, kit, duration, and reputation have a lot to do with the price of lash classes. Most certification training also requires you be licensed, though it differs from state to state. Many women love the look of long, thick eyelashes. Eyelash technicians are specially trained to apply high-end false eyelashes safely and securely. Becoming an eyelash technician usually, but not always, requires qualifying for an esthetician or cosmetologist license, as well as additional training in eyelash application.

Job Description

An eyelash technician applies false eyelashes to the eyelids of their clients. Clients will typically come in for a consultation, at which time the technician makes recommendations as to the style and color of eyelashes best suited to the client's face and desired appearance. Eyelash technicians who are also aestheticians or cosmetologists may offer additional services during these consultations, such as eyebrow waxing, threading or tinting.

Educational Requirements

In most states, eyelash technicians must be either a medical professional or a licensed barber, cosmetologist or esthetician. However, some states don't regulate the practice of eyelash application, opening the field to anyone, and a few jurisdictions have introduced legislation that would create a separate eyelash technician's licensing program. Minnesota, for example, licenses eyelash technicians who have completed an approved training program.

If you do not live in a state that issues a specific eyelash technician license, you'll have to choose between completing a training program in cosmetology or esthetics. Cosmetologists are trained in every aspect of beauty culture, including hairdressing, skin care and hair removal, although the bulk of their training focuses on cutting, coloring and treating client's hair. Estheticians, sometimes known as skincare specialists or aestheticians, focus on skincare, makeup and hair removal. Esthetician training programs often require significantly less time to complete, and these programs may also be less expensive than the full cosmetology program.

If you are having difficulty deciding which program makes the most sense for you, take some time to research the licensing laws in your state. For example, in Illinois, a cosmetologist must complete 1500 hours of education to be eligible to sit for the licensing exam. Estheticians, on the other hand, only need 750 hours of instruction. If you are interested in providing a full range of services, including hairdressing, a cosmetologist license may be your best option. On the other hand, if you want to focus on providing a more narrow range of services, such as hair removal and skincare, an esthetician's license is a quicker, less expensive option.

Companies that sell professional-grade lashes and lash extensions also offer educational programs and certification for those who wish to become lash technicians. Because these programs are often proprietary to the products sold by the company, do some research before selecting a lash brand that you feel comfortable working with and representing.

Salary

The United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track the income of eyelash technicians. It does, however, monitor the income of estheticians, who frequently offer niche services such as eyebrow and eyelash grooming and tinting. According to the BLS, the median hourly wage for skincare specialists was $17.55 in May 2018. This means that 50 percent of estheticians earned more and 50 percent earned less than this amount.

Industry

In many cases, a lash technician will opt to work in a salon, spa or boutique that offers makeup application services. Depending on the laws where you live, you may also have the option of providing lash services in your own home or in the homes of your clients. However, this may not be possible in all states, so it's important that you research the regulations in your area.

Years of Experience

Because eyelash technician wages are not yet tracked by the BLS or other wage survey providers, it isn't possible to show a correlation between job experience and earnings. However, a survey of estheticians by PayScale.com showed the following upward trend of annual median earnings for those who work as estheticians:

• 0-5 years: $34,000
• 5-10 years: $40,000
• 10-20 years: $43,000
• 20+ years: $50,000

Job Growth Trend

According to the BLS, employment for estheticians is expected to grow by 14 percent between 2018 and 2026. This expected growth is in part due to the opening of an increased number of spas and salons to meet consumer demand. As consumer demand for lash application increases, lash technicians may find their skills to be in high demand, opening up new opportunities for employment.

Why did I become a lash trainer?

I decided that I wanted to teach others the art of eyelash extensions around 3 years ago, when people who liked my work, asked me to teach them how. I was flattered and keen to share my knowledge, so I decided to enroll on an eyelash extension trainer course.

What qualities do you need to become a trainer?

Firstly, to become a successful trainer, you need to be an excellent communicator, speak well and present clearly. This is important because you'll need to engage your trainees and keep their attention for hours at a time.

Are you naturally organised? If so, that's great! Good trainers can handle several tasks at once. They know how to manage their time and work.

Effective trainers also know the eyelash extension process like the back of their hand. They can answer any question thrown at them and feel completely comfortable sharing their expertise. If they can't answer a question, they know exactly where to get the answer and can feedback to their student quickly. Having a high level of experience is also important. Good trainers have hands-on experience with every aspect of what they teach.

Do you consider yourself a 'people person?' Effective trainers enjoy working with people. They can engage groups of people and work with them to meet training goals. They also recognise the value of learning in their own lives and want to help others learn. They find satisfaction in sharing with others the skills and knowledge they have acquired through hard work and dedication.

Patience is key when it comes to being a trainer. The most effective trainers understand that people learn in different ways and at different paces. They take the time to make sure each trainee understands what's going on, what's expected of them and that they leave the training sessions with the skills they came for. This also means that the trainer has to be flexible and able to adjust their training plan to accommodate the audience.

It's great to also bring a flair of creativity to a training programme. This can mean creating exciting training materials or mixing it up with different training methods. Whatever you can do to keep the sessions interesting will keep trainees engaged.

A good trainer knows their material, their objectives and their presentation by heart. They also check to see that any equipment they expect to use in training is in place and working. When it comes to supporting materials, they make sure that there is enough for everyone, plus spares.

How to know if you are ready to become a trainer?

This is about asking yourself important questions around why you want to become a lash extension trainer. If your only answer is 'to earn more money' than it probably isn't the right career choice for you. I recommend asking yourself the following questions before you sign up to an eyelash extension trainer course:

• Would you describe yourself as an 'experienced lash technician?'

• Are you actually passionate about becoming a trainer, or do you just feel like it's what you 'should' be doing as the next step in your career?

• Do you have frustrations around the lash artist industry and ways that you think you'd be able to improve it?

• Is your current lash extension business doing well?

• Would you describe your current lash extension business as 'organised?'

• Are you happy to offer support to your students at any hour of the day?

• Are you a patient person?

• Do you love guiding people and watching them grow?

If you have answered 'yes' to all of these questions – great! It seems like becoming a lash trainer is the correct career path for you. However, if you answered 'no' to any of the questions, take some time to think about whether there is a flaw here that you can work on and if not, becoming a trainer might not be for you.

How to choose the right person for you

This should not be overlooked! You are within your rights to be selective over which course you enroll upon and who your trainer is. It's important that you engage with the trainer and find them interesting to listen to since you'll be spending many hours learning from them. I'd encourage you to reach out to them before you start the course, for a one-to-one conversation. This is also a great opportunity to clear up any worries that you may have.

I believe that the most important quality to look for in a lash extension trainer is that they visibly care. You need somebody that has your best interests at heart and genuinely cares about how well you do. At some point, you're going to want to give up, it happens to everyone and you need a trainer that's going to help pick you up and guide you forward. A good lash trainer will also offer aftercare, where they'll provide you with support beyond the duration of your course. This can be in the form of helping you with marketing for your business, or as simple as providing advice when you need it.

It's an exciting time to start a career in the booming eyelash extension industry! Since eyelash extensions have became popular, each state has new laws and rules being administered to regulate this profession. The first thing you need to do is find your local Board of Cosmetology and find out if this profession is being regulated in your state. There will be resources online, or you can usually call them directly. Find out all the requirements needed in order to obtain an Eyelash Technician License. If so, they will also have information about local businesses that are offering training that can be counted toward the hours needed to obtain a license from the state. You will have to complete a number of hours of training and then take a test. I suggest exploring your options on where to train by checking out different businesses and compare the prices and techniques you will learn. Keep in mind, that you should choose a reputable business that will ensure they teach you what will be on the test for your license. Ask your friends and put it out on social media if anyone they know has trained somewhere near you. It's always best to go to a place where someone you or someone you know has gone with success! Also, make sure that you are trained in volume lashes, as this is the most popular service customers want.

Once you take you've completed your training and pass your test, you will be licensed! Your state board will also have regulations about where you can perform the service. Some states that license this profession will usually require you to work out of a licensed salon space. You can check to see if you can license your home, but make sure your home is set up with the regulations needed to be approved.

If your state does not require you to be licensed to perform this service, you should also double-check to make sure they don't require you to offer services like this at a licensed establishment or salon. Sometimes, they will require you to be in a retail space instead of a home-space to do the service. Some states have no requirements at all for where you perform your service. If this is the case, I do recommend that you have waiver forms AND liability insurance. Even if you are in an unregulated state for this profession, you can still be sued if anything goes wrong. To obtain liability insurance, you can contact your local insurance agents and popular ones like State Farm to see if they offer general business liability insurance policies. If they don't, check out cosmetology liability insurance policies if they are willing to provide for you without a license. Usually between these two avenues, you will be able to find insurance.

And that's it! You are fully licensed and ready to start a career in such a wonderful industry. Be sure to continue your education of eyelash extensions by taking advanced or refresher courses!
